At Modus Community Housing complexes, our communal gardening spaces are designed for all residents to enjoy and use, providing a perfect environment to grow your own vegetables and keep them pest-free with simple, low-cost solutions. Common pests in New Zealand, such as snails, caterpillars, and aphids, can make gardening challenging. Fortunately, you can keep the garden healthy and pest-free using simple, low-cost solutions with items you probably already have at home. Here are some practical tips to help you protect our vegetable garden.

1. Snail and Slug Control

Eggshell Barriers
Crushed eggshells are a great natural deterrent for snails and slugs. Scatter the crushed shells around the base of your plants. The sharp edges of the eggshells will deter these pests from crossing over to your vegetables.

Beer Traps
Snails and slugs are notorious for munching on vegetable leaves. A simple and effective way to get rid of them is by using beer traps. Place shallow containers filled with beer around the garden. Snails and slugs are attracted to the beer, fall into the container, and drown. This method is inexpensive and environmentally friendly.

2. Caterpillar Control

Handpicking
One of the most straightforward ways to deal with caterpillars is to handpick them off your plants. Check the underside of leaves, where caterpillars often hide. Dispose of them far away from the garden to prevent them from returning.

DIY Chilli Spray
Create a homemade chilli spray to keep caterpillars at bay. Mix two teaspoons of chilli powder or chopped fresh chilies with a few drops of liquid dish soap in one litre of water. Spray this mixture on your plants. The chilli’s spiciness deters caterpillars from feasting on your vegetables.

3. Aphid Control

Soapy Water Spray
Aphids can cause significant damage by sucking the sap from your plants. A simple soapy water spray can help eliminate them. Mix a few drops of liquid dish soap with water in a spray bottle and apply it directly to the affected plants. The soap will suffocate the aphids without harming your vegetables.

Banana Peels
Place banana peels around the base of your plants. As they decompose, they release nutrients that benefit your soil and help repel aphids. This method is cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

4. General Pest Control Tips

Companion Planting
Certain plants can help deter pests when planted alongside your vegetables. For example, marigolds repel aphids and whiteflies, while basil can deter mosquitoes and flies. Consider incorporating companion planting into your garden strategy to naturally reduce pest problems.

Keep Your Garden Clean
Regularly remove weeds, dead plants, and debris from your garden. Pests often hide in these areas, so keeping the garden tidy reduces the chances of infestations.

Maintaining a pest-free vegetable garden doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. By using household items and simple techniques, you can protect the garden from common New Zealand pests. Happy gardening!
